One of our big goals at Programmr is to encourage more and more coders to get started with their own open source projects.
Your open source contributions not only help the community and the world at large, but they also make you a much more experienced and confident programmer. Plus they look great on your resume too!
What better way to get started with your first open source project than taking part in a contest where you're rewarded with cool prizes (and fame!) for your contributions to the community?
That's why you should get started on your entry for the San Francisco Open Data Coding Contest today!
Your mission is to make a useful webapp or mobile app using SF Open Data that would be of interest and benefit to the residents of San Francisco.
Winners will be chosen based on the concept, utility factor, virality, presentation and overall execution of the app.
Don't worry if you think those are all fancy words. Simply make a cool app that highlights San Francisco in an interesting way and you're good! The only compulsion is that your app should use city data from any dataset(s) of the SFO Open Data foundation.
Looking for ideas? Here are some:
1. Find and display a list of spots in San Francisco which were used as film locations in movies.
Present movie trivia, trailers and clips wherever you can.
Use data from SFData for the film locations.
Use data from iMDB, Youtube or similar sources for other movie info.
2. Does the number of trees on a street adversely affect the domestic violence crime rate of that street?
Plot out your findings and conclusions on an attractive web layout.
3. Arrange a biking trip to your favorite park, restaurant or pub.
Users need to specify start and end locations. The app then needs to show the best biking routes for your group to take.
4. Display a list of all graffiti spots in San Francisco.
Get the list of graffiti spots using SF Open Data.
Using Google Street View, allow the users to view the actual graffiti too.
These are just some sample ideas. Choose one you like from the list, or come up with your own unique ideas too! All the best!
